MIXTAPE | Love Letters from the Island of St. Helena | 05/02/2012

Love Letters from the Island of St. Helena

For those who don’t know, Saint Helena is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Being a remote island, it was used by the British as a place of exile. Napoleon I was probably the island’s most famous inhabitant. As many know, I recently drowned in a crushing torrent of depression. Rescue required me to leave the city where I had begun my true adult life, and return to the backwoods of Baltimore Count, to live under the watchful eyes of my parents.

This mixtape attempts to convey the range of emotions I’ve been experiencing, along with channeling a bit of high school nostalgia, since that was the last time I was in Baltimore for a significant period. What is most important, though, is the pervasive sense of loneliness. Because the loneliness is the worst. The loneliness is always there.

MIXTAPE | Beneath The Paving Stones, There Are Only Other, Older Paving Stones | 10/09/2011

Beneath The Paving Stones, There Are Only Other, Older Paving Stones

I’ve been sad and lonely. I’ve been unemployed (again) with too much time on my hands. I’ve been listening A LOT to Kaleidoscoptics' “Beneath The Paving Stones, The Beach!” mixtape, which is available here if you’ve never listened to it. This mixtape is the sequel, only filmed by a different director. I took some of the artists he had originally, added a few of my own, and (hopefully) kept the atmosphere while putting my mark on it.

MIXTAPE | Vivisections of Bushwick Romances | 07/02/2011

I found myself living in Bushwick, single in the summer. (Now I’m in a complicated relationship which is proving its complicated status simply in its interactions with the outside world). I, as I always manage, was (and am) having adventures. Mostly adventures that involved chasing boys.

In the mixtape I attempt to capture the highs, the lows, hit the walls and work the middle of my various romances and escapades.

I chose the word “vivisection” because the term refers to cutting into something that is alive, and this summer is shimmering with life.

The tracklist follows, and beneath that is a dialogue I composed by taking snippets of the song lyrics in track order. The superscript refers to the track number.

HER: Strange times are near1. I’m so fucked up, tie me up. We both like me and we both like you.2

HIM: I’ve got bones to pick with you. Your dreams keep us sleeping under rooftops and ceilings of vain neighborhoods. I’ve got doubts sewn into my pockets always. Holes in all my words. You use your good side to get you somewhere…me, I use my worst. Why do I keep coming back to you?3

HER: If at first you don’t succeed, you’ve got to recreate your misery. Because we all know art is hard, young artists have got to starve. Try, and fail, and try again…the comforts of repetition.4

HIM: You tortured little girl, showing them what love is all about. Where did all the time go? Everywhere it’s gone, gone, gone.5 We get some rules to follow, that and this, these and those…no one knows! We get these pills to swallow, how they stick in your throat. Tastes like gold…

HER: Oh what you do to me, no one knows.6 What I need from you…What I need to show…I know you feel it. Yeah… You…one day, you’re going to have to…
Let’s get over this?7
Touching your skin, kissing your smile…8

HIM: It’s all in your mind.9

HER: Tell me no, I say yes, I was chosen. And I will deliver the explosion. 10 I’m not bothered by what you say or how you dress. I’m a mess so you’ve always seemed inviting.11
Do you really want to be that way?

HIM: Tell me what to say.

HER: Did you do your best today?12

HIM: …if you want to. Clap your hands if you need to.13

HER: I wanted so badly for things to be the way they were. Because of all the foolish things I’ve done…

HIM: Nothing can compare to this last one. And even though I try to find –

HER: After all the foolish things we’ve done, nothing could compare to this last one. And even though I try to find a way to let you go…

HIM: …I don’t know why I am in it again.14

MIXTAPE | Still Searching | 03/23/2011
I’ve been having difficulty on this job hunt of mine. I’ve become stricken with what the Greeks call anhedonia.

an·he·do·ni·a –noun Psychology .lack of pleasure or of the capacity to experience it.

This mixtape attempts to capture the aimless, apathetic malaise I’ve been drenched in of late. It’s not peppy, that’s for sure. But if you’re looking for something chill, introspective, and just a little bit sad, this may be for you.
The mixtape is called Still Searching because that’s what I’m doing. Searching for a job, searching for comfort, searching for happiness. And for the equally lacking, I wish you the best of luck on all of your searches.

Note: The woman on the cover is Christine Chubbuck. I think she was searching for something she never found.

We got familiar with Alison Clancy through her Huff This! project, which made it in the list of our Best of NYC Emerging Artists Poll 2010. Electric Child is another project featuring this intriguing NYC based singer/songwriter/dancer - here’s a review of the song “Airshow”.
It starts with an insistent beeping, the kind you would hear on a heart monitor or some other piece of annoying machinery. Then, with the static pop of a PA announcement, a pleasantly detached voice intones “good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. This is your pilot. The plane is about to crash. This is not a safety announcement. There is no plan for your survival.” “Welcome to the air show” indeed. This slightly-electronic ethereal authority then tells us to sit back, relax and enjoy the crash. Cryptic predictions about rows 15-18 and row 25 make this reviewer think bandleader Alison Clancy is more than just the pilot of this flight, she’s the one pulling the strings of time and space. And it’s true. Clancy leads Electric Child on a disjointed journey; a touch of string guitar here, an electro-clash back beat there, a little bit emotional catharsis (“I can’t let go!”), and then an abrupt sign-off. This is her rollercoaster, and we’re all strapped in with blindfolds on, waiting for the next twist.

Imagine a symphony orchestra that just took a couple hits of windowpane. The drummers start trying to kill invisible dragonflies and the strings begin to melt into themselves. Someone somewhere starts to sing…and the group pulls themselves together into a cohesive machine of beat and vibrato. First impressions matter, and Duchess Leo makes it work with their opening track, “Your Sweet Love.” It’s powerful but not aggressive, pretty but still has substance. It also sets the pace for the rest of Golden Gray — a balletic audio trip into a sunshiney space – but there is just enough bite to keep it from being overtly pretentious. A dance record this is not, but the sonic prowess of Dan Ryan and Todd Buchler (the men of Duchess Leo) is clear. Buchler took composition and theory classes, while Ryan worked on the production side, mastering music software – and it paid off. Their effort is written all over Golden Gray with an elegant script and a steady hand.

The Spook Lights - Nudie Watusi

(Live From the Planet Sleazetop)

Raise your hand if you like The Cramps. Hey, who doesn’t! Some, I will argue, like The Cramps more than others. Stay with me here… I conjecture any band who include “billy” as a suffix and “psych” as a prefix in a self-written description of their sound like The Cramps a whole lot (probably more than you or I) and basically see them as a reigning influence on their sound. Please, correct me if I’m wrong.

Now, I will continue to argue, some bands do this better than others. When it falls, it falls hard. When it is done right, even a recording can capture the live energy as represented by The Cramps….hell, by the nature of punk rock, garage rock, surf rock, of rock in general…still with me? Basically I’m saying that good bands make good music. Sometimes it sounds a little bit like The Cramps, and I mean that in a good way. We up to speed? Excellent. Enter The Spook Lights…wheeling out of Lawrence, Kansas (in a convertible with a leopard print interior, I’d imagine) with the devil behind them.

The Spook Lights are psychobilly, falling prey to that rule I mentioned in the first paragraph (see “psych” and “billy” in their description) though they do a deft parry and swerve away from actually uttering the word. Hey, whatever floats your boat. Regardless, as you can hear for yourself (aren’t I kind), lead singer Scary Manilow channels his best Lux Interior, albeit maybe a half-octave up. Manilow squeals and stutters like a burned out car, and it’s dirtywonderful.

The grungy, but classically styled riff is solid and simplistic, raw but still steady. It is Manilow who is allowed to experiment, as noted before, and while the instruments (Curvacia VaVoom on guitar, Jet Boy also on guitar, and The Meld on drums) maintain their noisy presence, they seem to be the machina to his near-overwhelming Deus. Though there is some excellent surf guitar in the breakdown, you have to really pay attention to it, as it’s so easy to focus on the hypnotic vocals.

The lyrics aren’t bad either (if you can make them out, Manilow doesn’t exactly enunciate sometimes). Diving into the first verse is like a bite of a sundae after not having one for a while…a spoonful of delicious nostalgia.

"Now everybody knows/ the peppermint twist/ and you can do the alligator/ and it goes like this/ you’ve been mashing those potatoes/ since the day you were born…."

Harkening back to old dance crazes, it’s what you expected, and what you wanted. It’s also all one long pick-up line…that is, if the “nudie watusi” Manilow finally invites us all to do is what I think it is. (I think so.)

We’re all going to “get on the dance floor while” The Spook Lights “sing this song.” Perhaps we will also “shimmy like a long-tailed cat” (did I catch that right?) or “shake a leg shake a leg” or “do the nudie watusi all night long.”

All I know is we should “put our best foot forward.” The Spook Lights did, though I think it’s a cramped up zombie foot. You understand.

[If you’re in the Lawrence, Kansas area, the Spook Lights play regularly. They’ve got a Halloween show coming up that seems pretty boss…plus they’re doing something the night before the Scion festival. And if you’re in Kansas, you’d better be going to that goddamn Scion festival.

I’m not speaking to you if you’re not.]
